Freedom Camo II — Original Mixed-Media Canvas

$10,000.00

Freedom Camo II continues Akio Evans’s visual exploration of Harriet Tubman through camouflage, material transformation, and the act of escape.

The composition places Harriet within an environment constructed from acrylic paint, authentic hunting mesh, assembled Realtree camouflage fabric, hand-printed imagery, and an applied patch. On one side, Harriet is surrounded by materials traditionally designed to conceal and protect. On the other, her silhouette has been physically cut from the canvas, leaving an open space where her body once existed.

That absence becomes part of the story. Harriet has not disappeared. She has escaped the boundaries of the canvas.

By removing her figure from the surface, Evans transforms negative space into evidence of movement, liberation, and self-determination. The hunting materials speak to survival and pursuit, while the camouflage reflects Harriet’s ability to navigate dangerous environments, remain unseen, and guide others toward freedom.

Created in April 2025, Freedom Camo II is the second one-of-one original artwork in the Freedom Camo series.
