In Level One: The Chase, Harriet Tubman moves forward while being chased.
Rendered in an 8-bit, side-scrolling format, this piece depicts Ms. Tubman holding light as ghost-like figures pursue her from behind. These figures intentionally resemble the Ku Klux Klan not as a shock device, but as a historical reality: the ever-present threat of white supremacist violence during her missions south.
The black background represents danger, concealment, and the unknown the terrain where survival depended on timing, courage, and movement. Ms. Tubman is not frozen in fear; she is in motion. Progress is the only option.
This work reframes history as a game where the stakes were real, the enemies relentless, and the objective was freedom not escape, but advancement.
